AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE HOSTED BY THE
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT

“Public Works for Public Learning”

Held June 20 – 22, 2012
San Francisco, CA
at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero

This unique conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in beautiful San Francisco,California on June 20-22, 2012. Planned in conjunction with the American Public Works Association (APWA), information was presented on how to develop effective public exhibits and educational programs based on the themes of infrastructure, construction, and engineering.

Presentations from speakers around the world and across the country, highlighted examples of public works that developed education and outreach programs for the general public. In addition, the conference included a special tour of the Golden Gate Bridge Outdoor Exhibition currently still under development for the south visitor viewing area.

Guest Speakers included:

The keynote address was made by Dr. G. Wayne Clough, the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. The Smithsonian Institution is the largest museum complex in the world, and many of its buildings are historical and architectural landmarks.
Additional speakers included representatives from Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal, Eiffel Tower, Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Arizona Falls. Named both one of America's seven modern and civil engineering wonders, Hoover Dam operates a very successful visitor center and tour operation, and recently opened a new Exhibit Gallery that includes a walk-through model of a generator and interactive exhibits about power generation and conserving energy.
An example of a small, yet impressive, public works is WaterWorks, the educational focal point of a hydroelectric facility owned and operated by the Salt River Project (SRP) that is part of the Arizona Canal. Through gravity and good engineering the action of this 20-foot waterfall, named Arizona Fall, generates clean, renewable energy, as well as an inviting gathering place for the public where they can learn about the site, the use of water in the desert, and how hydroelectric energy is generated.
The Miraflores Visitors Center (CVM) is an expression of the permanent commitment of the Panama Canal Authority to strenghten the public's knowledge of the Canal. Located on the east side of the Miraflores Locks, the CVM allows visitors to observe transiting vessels from a distance of only a few meters and learn about the history and the various operations of the Panama Canal.
Under the influence of the pillars designed by Gustave Eiffel, the new pavillions and public areas are being completely refurbished to redo the 1st floor of the Eiffel Tower to create one of the most spectacular and attractive locations in Paris.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge was constructed in 1932 and it remains the world's largest steel arch bridge. BridgeClimb Sydney was founded in 1998, as a world first in the provision of safe and secure behind the scenes access for the public to experience an iconic bridge structure. To date almost 3 million people have climbed the bridge.

A special reception was generously sponsored by HDR Engineering, Inc. and Thomas Jee & Associates.
